Attention to Detail: 320 Ink's Drue Nickerson Builds Maine's Largest Screen Printing Shop - Ep. 16

We visit Maine's largest screen printing shop, 320 Ink, to talk with owner Drue Nickerson about his explosive growth and impressive shop. Drue's attention to detail is obvious from the moment you walk in the door. You're greeted with a clean and impressive retail space, a massive 320 Ink neon sign, a keg for sampling local craft beer, and an observation window overlooking the production floor.

320 Ink offers cutting-edge garments to retail clients. They've also brought embroidery in-house and have a dedicated seamstress. But what really sets 320 Ink apart is its culture. Drue's staff have stayed with 320 Ink for the long-term – he's got multiple employees with more than 5 years of service. He's a strong believer in treating his employees right and crafting a positive, sustainable work culture.

More than that, 320 Ink is designed to provide an unforgettable experience for every customer: "They get this experience they weren't expecting. [...] It's stuff that, when they leave, we want them to get home and be like, 'I just went to this screen printing shop, and it was awesome!' We want them to talk about it after the fact."

"A lot of our customers are selling this stuff retail. So it's important that they set themselves apart a little bit. Not buy the same thing everyone else is buying. They come in and say, 'Hey, what has no one else done yet?' [...] Trying to stay ahead and provide that extra service to the customer."

Interestingly, Drue runs both M&R presses and ROQ presses. His ROQ screen printing press is the largest press in Maine, "by a long shot." He's been very happy with both, but having two different sets of squeegees and flood bars seems to be a small sticking point.
