Marc Simpson served as Associate Director of the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art from 2000 to 2013. From 2004 to 2009 he was also Curator of American Art at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. From 1985 to 1994 he was the Ednah Root Curator of American Paintings at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

His work on Winslow Homer includes being principal author of Winslow Homer: The Clark Collection (2013) and curator of the Clark's two showins of Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History (2005 and 2013), as well as of Winslow Homer: Paintings of the Civil War (Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, 1988).
