On Friday, President Biden announced the U.S. will seize half the Afghan central bank assets in its possession, and divert the other half away from the central bank to relief efforts. The result will be an ongoing humanitarian catastrophe, and the destruction of economic activity in Afghanistan, which aid money will do little to solve. Last week, Rep. Pramila Jayapal introduced an amendment simply to study the consequences of seizing the money and sanctioning the governments. 44 Democrats and every Republican voted no.
