Introduction to Scleral Lenses

Muriel M. Schornack, O.D., Mayo Clinic Department of Ophthalmology offers an introduction to scleral Lenses. They are large diameter, rigid gas permeable contact lens, that rests on the sclera, the white part of the eye and traps a layer of fluid between the back of the lens and the front of the cornea. That gives it some unique fitting and optical characteristics.
