Making Mini Pallet Coasters

This is a quick sped up video of how I make mini pallets, often used for coasters.

An 8 foot 1x10 will yield parts for about 100 mini pallets. The dimensions of each pallet are 4x4" square and 5/8" thick. The slats are 1/8"x1/2"x4" and the runners are about 5/16" square by 4".

I start by cutting 1/2 inch strips for the slats, then set the saw to about 1/8 inch and cut those strips down. I tweak the saw after the first cut so each 1/2x3/4 piece yields four 1/8th" strips. Then those are cut down to 4 inches long on the miter saw with a stop block. Then I cut the middle runners, they're about 5/16 (give or take) so I can get two out of the thickness of 3/4 material.

Then I start assembling the mini pallets. I'm using a 23 gauge pin gun with 3/8" inch long nails. I tried using jigs, but I'm actually faster without. I start with the perimeter, making sure the corners line up square, then eyeball the middle runner. Each junction gets two nails. Then add the 3 center slats, again eyeballing the placement. Those can be nailed pretty quickly using my index finger to guide the gun. (Don't shoot yourself in the finger!) Flip it over, and add the bottom three slats and move on to the next one. I can do about 40 pallets an hours if I'm fast.
