A few rules you might have heard that are truly optional...not rules at all!
1. Use only transparent pigments in your watercolor paintings.
2. Don't use white or black paint for watercolor painting.
3. Work with a limited palette of 3-12 colors
4. Use only 100% cotton paper from 400 year old companies.
5. Never overwork your paintings.
6. Always paint from life, never photographs

Rules you CAN adopt and use to make your paintings better:
Rule 1. Do whatever makes you feel the most satisfied.
Rule 2: Other people's opinions should only minimally affect your opinion of your art, if at all.
Rule 3: No artist makes perfect paintings. Accumulate success by degrees.
Rule 4: You choose the direction your learning should take as you seek to grow your skills.
