Road to Hana | 12 Best Stops | When Maui was Closed but the Hana Highway was Open

The backside of Haleakala or the Road to Hana backside is a notorious road. Rental car companies threaten to void your contract if you drive on it. Take a look to see how bad it really is.

In August 2020, we drove the Road to Hana when Maui was still closed to visitors. Against our better judgment, we decided to keep driving past Hana onto the back side of Haleakala. We needed to get home fast.

The back side drive is beautiful and many do the drive for all the off-the-beaten-path things to do. The Reverse Road to Hana is an itinerary worth doing. We didn’t have time for stops but watch the video to get an idea of what it is like to drive the dirt roads, the sheer cliffs, and the desert landscape behind Haleakala.
