Yamaha WR250 fork strip, inspection & rebuild #1613
Dirt bike owners will be only too aware of the problems over fork seals, especially with upside-down type forks. There isn't a day that goes by at the Yamaha store that I don't see someone bringing in a pair of forks to have new seals fitted.
It's not a cheap job either, usually around NZ$250 for a strip down, clean, hydraulic seal replacement and some fresh oil, add another $100 for bushes and even more if its a full overhaul with inspection & new o-rings.
Asking customer's why they don't do the work themselves it soon became clear that many are 'put off' by the whole 'hydraulic' thing and the requirement for 'special tools'...
Well, once you have watched this video I'm hoping that I can save you some serious coin. This video takes away the 'mystery' of how to service upside-down forks:
See how to strip down the forks using nothing more than regular workshop tools, what parts need to be cleaned, how to inspect the various parts for condition & then the re-assembly process covering the fitting new seals, new bushes & lastly, adding the correct amount of hydraulic oil.
I follow the process as outlined in the Official Yamaha service manual for this WR250, however it's the same forks on the WR450 & many of the 'YZ' series too.
Many MZ & Enduro bikes of this era will have similar forks so I'm hoping this video helps out quite a few people around the World!
If you have any questions then please add them to the comments section and I'll get back to you as soon as possible...
