How To Paint Skin Tones

Skin tones: is there anything tougher to master? Watch me try to paint four different skin tones in this quick video. I looked for skin tones that were radically different from each other and in the same pose (not easy!). I think you'll see how many layers of paint it takes to build up convincing and bold skin tones with watercolor. It takes some patience, but once you get the hang of it, all other paints seem...less magical. I can't put it any other way. So please give this a try with faces you choose yourself!

The video has been sped up 12 times, and as usual I was painting as fast as I possibly could (75 minutes).

Colors used: cadmium yellow medium, cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, sepia, hooker's green, burnt sienna, and dioxazine mauve, all by Old Holland.

Paper: 9"x12" 140 lb. watercolor paper by The Langton (it's on a block and is attached all the way around with adhesive, so no need for tape).

Masking fluid: Incredible White Mask Liquid Frisket.

Brushes: #1 American Painter 4000 round, #7 Grumbacher Goldenedge 4620 round.
