Spiti Valley | Monks in a Mountain Desert

The Buddhist monks living in the Himalayas have fascinated us for many years. Living in some of the most remote places on the planet, inhospitable terrains and totally disconnected from the crazy world; they are the most content, happy and peaceful humans you can ever meet.

In our recent expedition with Spiti Holiday Adventure we were privileged to have spent some invaluable time with monks from this region and tried to capture their daily life staying in the monasteries. From the thousand year old monastery of Tabo, also called as the "Ajanta of the Himalayas" to the jaw dropping Key Gompa nestled in the mountains at a height of almost 14,000 feet to witnessing the stunning classroom view of the students in Dhankar. We really enjoyed the serene moments and the experience we shared during this process.
