2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster-Sporty Two Door Convertible

With a history that extends back all the way to the earliest 300SL Gullwing, the Mercedes-AMG SL-class is a real automotive icon. Fresh examples haven't been as exciting as expected and a host of newer two-door, four-seat grand touring convertibles have made it obsolete, but Mercedes is working on an all-new SL-class that will launch in 2021 as a 2022 model. The latest SL-class will share a platform with the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car, so performance and handling should be a big step up from the 2018 model. Facts are scarce so far, but it’s expected both six and eight-cylinder engine is optional, there’s a luxurious and tech-heavy cabin, and a folding fabric roof in place of the last generation's power hardtop. Mercedes-AMG's iconic SL-class will be all-new for 2022, following a short hiatus. Expect the new SL to debut soon and be on sale before the end of 2021.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Neither Mercedes nor the EPA has offered any insight into the 2022 SL-class's fuel-economy estimates yet, but expect information to be available closer to the car's on-sale date. Both V-8–powered versions of the 8-series and the LC are rated at 25 mpg highway, which is a good target for the SL63, but expect the SL53 to be the more fuel-efficient of the two. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The interior design takes its creativity from the AMG GT and GT 4-Door Coupé, according to Mercedes, but here the centre console is ruled by an 11.9in touchscreen. The company said the portrait orientation is better for navigation, and the entire screen can be tilted electronically to give drivers the best possible view.

Running the brand’s MBUX infotainment system, the 12.3in instrument display is fully digital, and drivers can customise the menus to suit their specific preferences. Mercedes said the screen “is not designed to be free-standing but integrated into a high-tech visor” that prevents glare caused by sunlight. There is also an optional head-up display that can show the car’s surroundings in 3D.

The AMG SL adopts a 2+2 seating layout for the first time since the Mercedes SL R129 model from 1989. The rear seats are suitable for children, and when they are not in use, Mercedes says a draught stopper can prevent unwanted airflow around the driver and front passenger.

In keeping with the car’s sporty yet comfortable brief, Mercedes has paid close attention to the interior finish. Buyers can choose from single- or two-tone Nappa leather, which can be combined with a variety of stitching colours. Burmester speakers are integrated into the doors, and 64-colour ambient lighting allows drivers to adjust the mood of the cabin.

Mercedes-AMG hasn't released any information about available driver-assistance features, but we expect the best and most modern tech to make its way to the 2022 SL-class.
