My Сoach Pressed Me But I Am Thankful For That

This is Mick, and he wants to tell you a crazy story about his relationship with his coach. He’s a talented athlete, but his sport is not the most popular one. He adores it, though. But once, his new coach nearly made him quit. However, now Mick knows that he would never change his coach for someone else. This is what happened.

Mick likes sports a lot. The city where he lives has a very good sports facility with a number of different courses to choose from. He had always been part of the usual team sports, but he was never much of a team player. At some point, he decided that he needed to choose something new, as his motivation was dissipating fast. He was also a typical teenager who had lots of problems with his studies, with girls, and with his parents. He had a lot of frustration and anger inside of him, and wanted to take the pressure off. This is why he decided that single combat sports would be perfect for him.

However, Mick soon learned that ordinary martial arts didn’t attract him very much – they were too violent and traumatic for him. That’s when one of the coaches offered him an exotic solution, which was fencing. The chances are many of you don’t know what it is, and neither did Mick at the time. The idea is that you fight with a sword in beautiful white clothes that fully protect you from any damage, and which let you concentrate on your goal of hitting your rival with a weapon in a certain way.

Unexpectedly, it turned out that Mick had a talent. His coach was very enthusiastic, and after several months of training in a group he proposed that he start training with a private coach that he knew, who was a highly qualified specialist. He told Mick that Mr. J, as everyone called him, led all his private students to spectacular results, and that this was the best offer he would get. Of course, he agreed. It turned out that Mr. J had already seen him at training, and he liked what he had seen.

Mick’s a bit ashamed to tell you about his feelings now. It was horrible. Mr. J squeezed all the energy and enthusiasm out of him. The first thing he told Mick was this: “You haven’t done any physical preparation, so now we’ll concentrate on this”. He started with 2 hours of cardio and crossfit, and he said to him: “And now we will begin working on the basic steps.” Mick thought it was a joke, but he was dead serious.

The worst thing was that Mr. J never had a nice word to say about Mick. He always had this sour expression on his face, as if he was the worst student he had ever had. He was working his socks off just to earn his appreciation, at least just a little bit, and every time he got that “Meh, not impressed” face. The results of Mick’s strenuous training regime were visible – he won each time without even too much effort. He thought that this would be enough for Mr. J to say to him: “Good job!”. All he got was a ticking off that his winning score was 15-6 when it was supposed to be 15-0!

He felt so useless; he needed some praise so much, and all he got was constant nagging and humiliation. Mick thought many times about giving up, even though generally he was not a quitter by nature. He had his first big, high-level competition coming up, and the preparations were so painful and unbearable that he decided that afterwards he would either leave his coach or give up fencing. He was training at fencing all day long, and during the nights he had nightmares where he would see Mr. J. He arrived at the competition all on edge.

Mr J. had his “I’m not impressed” face on all day. He didn’t even bother talking to him or give him advice ahead of his multiple fights with other fencers. But Mick hadn’t realized how much progress he’d actually made. He passed all the stages during that day without too much effort. Didn’t he deserve at least a “well done”? No, according to Mr. J. When he got to the finals, he was already furious. He had just one final fight to win the competition ahead of him, and Mr. J was still silent. At that point the anger rose up in him, and when the fight started Mick imagined that his rival was his coach. So, he had the energy that made him move forward, the frustration that made him beat his imaginary Mr. J again and again. When it was over, he found that he was the champion.

Then suddenly something unexpected happened. Mr. J ran towards him yelling “Good job, boy! I knew it, I knew it! Well done!” He was smiling happily and hugging him. Mick couldn’t understand what was happening. He couldn’t even imagine his coach smiling. But suddenly the realization came that it had all been part of Mr. J’s strategy to make him excel – that in the end, his perfectionism was what had made him win, and that he had put lots of effort into his victory as well. He forgot all the bitter words he wanted to say to him, and all he said was, “Thank you, Mr. J”.
