Tactical 22 LR Competition How to Shoot Multi Distance Know Your Limits Stages
Stage 3 of the May 2015 .22 LR Marksmen Challenge held at the Hobble Creek Range in Springville, Utah on the 3rd Saturday of every month. There's an AM match at 9 am and and afternoon match at 2 pm with 30 shooters each.
This stage consisted of 15 rounds max and 99 second time limit.
Large "Know Your Limits" target at 100 yards size 8" down to 2"
Smale KYL target at 25 yards - 2" down to 1/4"
Shooter must engage the first target (8") at 100 yards then move to the largest target at 25 yards then back to the second target at 100 yards and so on.
Shooter must hit to move on, an miss requires that the shooter start all over with the remaining time and rounds left. The same will result if they shoot the wrong target.
This stage requires some preparation in order to excel.
1 - What magnification is best to accommodate both distances.
2 - Will you hold or dial to compensate for the drop of the bullet at the given distance. Holding is preferred but requires that the shooter know the subtensions of their reticle. This also brings up the debate between a front focal plane optic and a second focal plane optic. With FFP the magnification doesn't matter because your sub-tensions are always correct whereas with a second focal plane you have to run the optic at it's index point which is often max power. This can present some complication when trying to hold over.
3 - Shooter must focus between shots to have a clear sight picture or choose to sacrifice some degree of focus.
4 - Should you dial for wind or hold for wind.
