DKW Wankel motorcycle start up

A very rare 1975 DKW W-2000 Wankel attended the May Classic Cars and Coffee meet at UWA on 26 May 2019. The bike drew an admiring crowd, especially when it was fired up.

Motorcycle and small engine manufacturer Sachs developed a Wankel rotary engine in the late 1960s. It was used in a snow mobile originally with some success so they developed it further for motorcycle use. The resulting bike was released in 1975 and sold officially under the Hercules brand name, except in Britain and Australia, where it was badged as a DKW. Sales were disappointing however and although the bike was only manufactured for one year, sales dragged out for years. This bike is one of three shipped to Perth by a motorcycle dealer. None of the three sold and all were placed in storage. All three remain in WA.
