Jean Michel Basquiat Words Are All We Have at NAHMAD CONTEMPORARY

James Kalm has been looking at the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat since he burst on the New York scene in 1981. With the recent record auction price of $57,285,000 for “Untitled” (1982) at Christies New York, the frenzy for anything Basquiat has swamped the international art world. “Words Are All We Have” takes a more nuanced look at the relation between Basquiat’s use of text, it’s musical, poetic and conceptual aspects within the oeuvre of this iconic artist. Taking its impetus from “The Unknown Note Books” exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, this show presents over twenty major painting covering the main part of Basquiat’s career. Curator Dr. Dieter Buchhart explores the relational aspects of these works to the linguistic conceptual practice they subsumed. This program was recorded May 17, 2016.
