Hello here is Carl the LandscapeGuy with a new Koi video. Last time, we examined the Koi from the floating net cage and released them into the natural pond. That video will be linked at the end. Well protected under the safety net, the koi are reunited and developing splendidly. It’s summer and the pond now looks like this. The continuous sunny days this year warmed the pond up nicely. At this time of the year, the surrounding trees are really beneficial for the shade they provide. Rising temperatures ensure fast growth of the fish. I also feed them of course, but far below the amounts used in conventional koi ponds. So the koi have to look for food themselves in the big pond as well. You can already see that the Koi are comfortable in their mud pond. And of course, the higher temperatures give them an even bigger appetite. Many of the little ones have already exceeded 30 cm and it's really great to see that. Now check this out, they are sometimes so greedy that they come out of the water, just to get the food. We’re enjoying the summer, the good weather and the warm nights. But you can tell that the hot weather is causing more and more evaporation. The banks of the natural pond begin to dry out. But the relatively steep banks keep the water surface relatively unchanged in size. But the water is noticeably less each day and there is no precipitation in sight. I had connected the roof drainage from several houses to the pond so that it is well fed with rainfall and the pond itself also acts as a rainwater retention basin. But that doesn’t matter if it doesn’t rain.
Even so, the koi are still well, but the high metabolism, high temperatures and the high oxygen demand not only for the fish, but also for the bacteria in the water and now also a sinking water level, can lead to problems. So I reduced the daily amount of food to a minimum and maintain a good overview of everything. The pond is deep enough in the middle so that the fish always have enough space but at high temperatures the reduction of the water body can be worrisome. And finally it’s time. The rain is coming and the pond starts to fill up slowly. The pond water was already looking cloudy and muddy and that’s where the fresh rainwater helps. Here you can see again how much water is missing in the pond, normally the water at this time of year was always at the top of the vegetation. The embankment is partially dried out so that cracks have already formed in the soil. Some lily pads even threatened to dry up. All of the pond’s inhabitants enjoy the fresh late summer rain. It looks like the koi are happy. Naturally, everything has changed for the better and every single Koi has survived everything without any damage. It is now autumn, the water level has almost reached its normal height and the pond is quiet and peaceful in the still warm autumn sun. The water temperature has already dropped considerably and the koi are not so lively anymore. But they are still eating very well, so they can go strong into the winter season. These fish are already a little special, because from the very beginning I kept the koi only in a natural environment, which made them very robust. For years, they have gotten along without pond liner, filters, ventilation and heating and I love watching them. Many thanks for watching and for so many subscriptions. There will be more Koi videos and videos from the garden and landscaping coming. On my channel you will find videos about the construction of this pond and many other projects. Thanks for the support, and remember: Your landscape is your living space, until next time, I'm Carl the landscape guy. #koi #pond #fish
