What is and how to use an MHL Adapter for HDMI Mirroring

UPDATED video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrBkQ4GUXf0&hd=1

In this video, I show and explain what an MHL adapter/port is. MHL stands for Mobile High-Definition Link and allows manufacturers to mirror HDMI through other ports, typically the microUSB port (also used for data connectivity and charging).

MHL adapters are available online through MonoPrice, eBay and others for ~$10.

If you have a the new Samsung Galaxy S III, make sure you purchase the newer 11-pin MHL adapter, NOT the older/first-generation 5-pin MHL adapter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-definition_Link#The_Galaxy_S_III_MHL_port_controversy

On one end of the MHL adapter is a female, full-sized HDMI port as well as a female microUSB port. Power MUST be provided for the MHL adapter to work: either through a wall charger or a USB port off another device such as a TV or cable box.

MHL allows for MIRRORING of the screen, not an extension or 2nd display. As such, there is NO performance difference from the phone to the connected display.
(Some people have asked if video playback is different on MHL than on the phone. It is IDENTICAL. The images are MIRRORED. If it plays smoothly on the phone, it will be smooth on the LCD/HDTV.)

MHL outputs up to 1080p (through as of yet, no device have 1080p screens for mirroring) as well as full 7.1 channel surround sound.

Currently, MHL-capable phones and tablets include devices from HTC, Samsung, LG, and others.
