Michel Legrand Orchestra - Les Parapluies de Cherbourg - Suite
Response to nickel serenade ~ In 1979 Legrand recorded an orchestal suite still the standard version running just over 31 minutes with some nice jazz passages early on . Recorded in London with British jazz soloists but essentially a wonderful musicals film score touching all bases. This version featuring harp is much later early 1990s when I purchased my copy initially I preferred the earlier jazz inflected version Nowadays . I'm torn between both almost equally attractive. and who doesn't like harp featured prominently in an orchestra? In response and apologies to bkynbiker such is the swift changing state of the disc business I just do not know whether this recording is still available.
Legrand treated us to two full orchestral settings of his most successful musical. In this one harp (Catherine Michel) is featured as main protagonist but apart from a minor reshaping and redistribution of the music the score at 32mins is essentially the same. The jazz aspects of the music are muted in favour of a concert style symphonic suite Someone noted in U Tube commentary~at 24 minutes a similarity to Dr Kildare a theme we all love Yet As one primed to pick up unintended similarities musical patterns and phrases swishing through the universe~ surprise it completely bypassed me Jerry Goldsmiths Dr Kildare theme is almost bell ringing romantic but music is also about context The romantic mood in the Legrand at 24 minutes is more subdued an incidental musical link in the overall sweep of the Suite
