THIS Is Why GREGG POPOVICH Is The G.O.A.T! (7 GENIUS Plays By POP)

Last night we saw once again why Greg Popovic is the GOAT. Check out this crazy play he drew up to tie the game.
Down by 3 the Spurs seemingly clear out for a Derozan and Aldridge 2 men game.
Demar rejects the screen and starts driving, shifting all the attention towards him.

Meanwhile, Lamarcus knows exactly where he’s gonna go. Back to screen for Belineli and look at all the space the Italian sharpshooter has. Completely wide open as he sends this game into overtime and San Antonio eventually win it.

So that inspired me to go through every single Spurs assist so far, and pick out the most creative play calls by Pop. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.

Here is another misdirection play. The initial idea is that they are isolating Rudy Gay on the block. So you can see all this screening to get him the ball there.

But as he catches it, with all eyes on him, there is 1 final back screen from Derrick White for Jacob Poeltl. And that simple, he is down low with a smaller defender on him. Great lob pass and Jacob is going to finish this with a reverse layup.

And on that topic, here is another great lob from Rudy, this time from out of bounds.

So right here Patty Mills sets a pick for Derozan, that the Wolves are gonna cover with a switch. Then you got Mills coming out of a screen himself from Aldridge. And since Minesota is switching this one as well, you can clearly see that Wiggins is behind his man and Lamarcus has an open lane. And as I mentioned, Rudy throws a nice pass, and Aldridge dunks it.

A nice quick out of bounds set that is challenging to cover.

Watch this little trick that they pull off here.

Derozan starts under the basket. Curls, but instead of going out, he cuts and goes inside to set a pick for Aldridge to get a nice inside position right here. At least that’s how it seems, since teams do that often for their big men. But instead, Lamarcus fakes in, goes out, and that’s when Demar actually screens for him. With nobody expecting that, Aldridge finds himself open in his favorite area. The elbow midrange. And of course he raises up unbothered and knocks down this jumper.

And speaking of tricks, here’s a quick one. We got a post up on the block, and Belinelli casually goes to set a pick but then in the blink of an eye, he’ll sprint towards the basket catching the defense asleep. The pass needs to be pretty much perfect for this to work, and luckily for them, the San Antonio has a great passing big man who can do just that.

This next play, Pop called it out as loud as he could and look what happens.

High pick and roll here, and as they switch, watch the positioning of the rest of the Spurs as Forbes is gonna bring Lou Will down low. And while we have a misdirection pick and roll up top, you got the tallest guy on the floor, going against the smallest one in the paint. So this is gonna be a super easy finish, that was made possible, 1. By the positioning down low and 2. By the quick roll of Aldridge, that forced a switch initially.

And on this last play, as nice as it is, I want to focus on the execution itself.

Check out how Forbes is going to fake the drive and pin CJ down here, so that by the time he starts curling around the screens, he has Mccollum trailing behind, and that creates just enough time to get the shot off and swish it. Great design but also great execution here on the out of bounds play.
