A few months ago a company called OptionSellers.com blew up a fund. These guys or fund were managing clients money and investors ended up getting wiped out by OptionSellers disastrous trading in the natural gas market. These guys were selling options which is known as an income producing strategy. And yes when done right the probability of success with the trade is quite high because the majority of options will expire worthless and if you're selling these options you are going to collect the premium.

What I Learned from the OptionSellers.com Blowup

Author and registered Commodity Trading Advisor James Cordier of OptionSellers.com was the latest casualty of a strategy known to 'capsize the boat'. His company specialized in writing commodities options for high net-worth individuals. It seems that James was short 'call options' on Natural Gas recently; now Natural Gas spiked absolutely dramatically. If price of the call options went up sharply; the fund had large amounts of call options in this and I think he got hammered.

INTL FCStone Inc. liquidated about 300 client accounts managed by OptionSellers after their balances fell below minimum margin requirements. The total losses are thought to exceed $150 million.

What can we learn from this? If we look at the past there are several occasions where Natural Gas has spiked up dramatically so its not out of the question to expect this to happen again at some point. So perhaps James was a bit naive here?
