Artificial Intelligence and Personhood | Zachary Porcu, PhD & Evan Getz, PhD | TEDxU Saint Katherine
"We have advanced far enough in our development of Artificial Intelligence to understand that we are in danger of losing control of it. ...This means that we are designing ourselves out of our lives," writes Eve Poole (Robot Souls, author).
What does it mean to be a person? Are there absolute attributes of personhood? While the challenges of an evolving AI-driven societal transformation continue to be defined and debated, it is important to consider the potential impact of such technology on human identity. This new order of techne will pose tremendous opportunities for human advancement if managed properly. The perils of mismanagement may erode the very definition of the human person. Zachary Porcu earned his PhD in Theology from the Catholic University of America where he studied church history and specialized in the church fathers of late antiquity. He also holds degrees in philosophy, history, literature, and Classics (Greek and Latin).
Professor Evan Getz earned his PhD from Baylor University in 2008 and has been teaching writing, composition, literature, philosophy, apologetics, Latin, Greek, and Great Books for over 15 years.
