🌟 QUESTIONS 🌟
1) How does it feel to be done with The Poppy War trilogy? What will you miss the most about this world? Do you have any words of advice or lasting messages for fans who are sad to part with the characters? 1:15
2) What has your experience been like in the publishing industry as a Science-Fiction Fantasy author when the genre has been historically so white and male-dominated? Your acceptance speech for the Hugo Awards really spoke to a lot of people. 9:27
3) The Poppy War heavily discusses themes of western imperialism, especially in Books 2 and 3, using the Hesperians as a parallel. The story doesn’t shy away from criticizing the West’s prejudiced beliefs that lead to their overt racism. Have you received any backlash from portraying the West as a villain in your novels? 16:20
4) While Rin & Nezha’s relationship can be interpreted as being romantic, there are no overtly romantic scenes or interactions between the two characters. (My friends and I were discussing how fantasy books sometimes like to depict a central romance as a way to entice readers/develop a strong fandom.) Was it a deliberate decision to exclude any major romantic narratives from this story? 21:32
5) Did you always intend for Rinezha to be the star-crossed lovers and for Kitay and Rin to be platonic friends? 26:20
6) Your next work is a dark academia book set in London. I read in one of your other interviews that you wanted to write a story about students vs. the government. Will we see any incorporation of Asian history into this novel? Would you ever return to writing another epic fantasy? 28:02
7) The military strategy in the books were some of my favorite scenes to read. How did your experience as a competitive debater in high school and History Major influence the way you created the logical puzzles and military strategies? 34:56
8) For many Asian readers, this was a book that really helped us connect with our history and made a lot of us feel seen. Though TPW trilogy is largely based on Asian history, readers from across the world who come from countries that also suffered under the brutality of Imperial Japan and Western Colonization found TPW to be an incredibly important story as it brings these often ignored atrocities to light. What has the reception been like from your family and from readers in other countries where TPW has been sold? 38:33
FAN SUBMISSION QUESTIONS:
1) FMK: Rin, Kitay, Nezha? 42:52
2) What made you decide to have Altan use a trident as his weapon of choice? 43:44
3) What was your rationale in making Rin dark-skinned when you yourself are light-skinned? 45:39
4) What were your intentions with Venka’s character arc? 49:46
THIS OR THAT 51:10
• Azula vs. Rin?
• Fire vs. Water?
• Chaaltan vs. Rinezha?
• TPW vs. TDR. vs TBG?
• Sushi vs. KBBQ vs. Dim Sum?
