Charcoal Fabric Drawing: Part 1 Subtractive Method

In this video, I’m using the subtractive, or ‘Reductive’, method of tonal drawing of fabric starting with a toned ground, using vine charcoal, then creating a gesture drawing of the fabric with charcoal pencils. From there, I use a variety of erasers to pick out the varying degrees of lighter values, leaving the toned ground as the mid tones and reflective light of the drawing. Vine charcoal and charcoal pencils are also used to add darker values.
