What’s the Difference Between Mindfulness and Meditation? Therapist Andres Duran, LPCC Answers
What’s the difference between mindfulness and meditation?
Sage Therapist Andres Duran, LPCC answers this question in our new Wellness Wednesday video.
A lot of the time the terms mindfulness and meditation can be used interchangeably but really what it comes down to is a secular practice. Meditation is usually spiritual or there's ritual or ceremony around it. Whereas, mindfulness really is a non spiritual version of what we’ve learned from meditation. In other words, what psychologists and scientists have studied and learned is consistent and in all forms of meditation across religions and cultures and they figured out what really works and what is beneficial for people. Then they figured out ways to turn them into usable skills that anyone can practice anytime anywhere.
Mediation typically requires having a space and maybe having specific things that you do, like maybe a chant or Mantra.
Mindfulness, however, doesn’t require a specific place or set of tasks. Once you understand mindfulness, you know you can practice anywhere.
As Andres says, “You don't have to meditate to be mindful but you need to be mindful to meditate”.
