Shoulder Dislocation - Bankart Lesion

Shoulder Dislocation
Dr. Edmond Cleeman -
This is an educational video about Shoulder Dislocations. The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body. However, some stability is sacrificed to achieve this great motion. The ligaments, capsule and labrum are important structures that provide stability to the shoulder joint.

On occasion, a traumatic injury occurs and the shoulder dislocates. This means the ball pops out of the socket. This causes a torn ligament and a torn labrum, which is called a Bankart Lesion. Most of the time the shoulder dislocates out the front, rarely out the back. The age of the patient is critical. Young patients have a very high risk that the shoulder will dislocate again in the future. Older patients have a lower risk of re-dislocation, but have a higher risk of suffering associated injuries, such as fractures, rotator cuff tears and nerve injuries.

The good news is that many patients are successfully treated without surgery. For those who fail non-operative management, Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery is a good option to stabilize the shoulder and improve function.

This video reviews the clinical picture, pathology and treatment of Shoulder Dislocations. I show an arthroscopic shoulder surgery video treating an unstable shoulder. We have included diagrams and surgical videos to help demonstrate this injury and the treatment.

This video is for educational purposes only, it is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment from a licensed healthcare professional. Thank you for watching, we look forward to your comments.
