L'humiliation de la défaite de 1918 et la signature du traité de Versailles avaient suscité rancœurs, frustrations et désirs de reconquête chez les peuples allemand. C'est l'idée que la classe politique allemande est à l'origine de cette défaite qui entraîne un sentiment de rancœur au sein de l'armée qui rejoindra les nazis dans leur ascension au pouvoir.

En décembre 1932, l'Allemagne avait obtenu de la Société des Nations, le principe d'égalité des droits en matière d'armement. Dès sa nomination au poste de chancelier, Hitler, réclame l'application immédiate de ce principe, mais devant l'opposition de la France, il décide de se retirer de la Société des Nations et d'entamer une reconstitution progressive et clandestine d'un potentiel militaire, ceci en violation des dispositions du Traité de Versailles.
Hitler ne cache pas ses ambitions expansionnistes exprimées dès 1924 dans Mein Kampf. Sur ces ambitions visant à conquérir un espace vital pour le peuple germanique se sont greffées les velléités expansionnistes du régime fasciste italien qui tenta tant bien que mal de se constituer un empire colonial en Éthiopie et en Europe du Sud.

Après une opération de provocation connue sous le nom d'incident de Gleiwitz, les troupes allemandes envahissent la Pologne sur tous les fronts, le 1er septembre 1939, à 4h45 du matin. C'est le début de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.

The humiliation of the defeat of 1918 and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles had aroused resentments, frustrations and desires for reconquest among the German people. It is the idea that the German political class is at the origin of this defeat which brings about a feeling of resentment within the army which will join the Nazis in their rise to power.

In December 1932, Germany obtained from the League of Nations the principle of equal arms rights.
