In this video, I demonstrate the different acrylic painting techniques that I use to paint these purple statice flowers.

I start out by diluting the acrylic paint with water. This allows me to apply washes of acrylic to the canvas in a manner that's similar to watercolor painting.

As the background is drying, I mix up the greens that I use for the stems. I start with two shades of green. I use a light green for the highlights and then I add purple to the green to make it darker and less saturated.

Dry brushing is useful for quickly creating the impression of texture. I use it in the background and on parts of the flowers.

I have been using these stretched canvases from Blick for years now. They're affordable and they're well made. The canvas is stapled on the back and the corners are square. The texture seems just right for my purposes, it's not too rough or too smooth.

Gray is easier to mix colors on because it's not a stark white.

I like this table top easel because it folds flat and there's a drawer on the bottom for storing supplies such as tubes of paints and brushes. You can adjust to different angles.

Acrylic gouache works well for toning canvases because it dries to a matte finish which is easier to draw on. It's almost like colored gesso. If you don't want to buy a set of acrylic gouache then you can add ultra matte medium to regular acrylics to get a similar matte surface.

You can add this to regular acrylics to make them dry to a matte surface that's similar to acrylic gouache.

GOLDEN OPEN ACRYLICS http://shrsl.com/2sc9i
I like using Golden OPEN acrylics because they dry slower and they give me more time to work with the paint. It also stays wet on the palette much longer than regular acrylics.

ACRYLIC RETARDER http://shrsl.com/2scb2
Many brands of acrylics make their own retarder that you can add to the paints you already own. You don't want to add too much or the paint may remain tacky, read the directions from the manufacturer before use.

LIQUITEX SLO-DRI BLENDING MEDIUM http://shrsl.com/2scas
This slo-dri blending medium from Liquitex is easier to use than retarder because you can add as much as you like to the paint. It contains acrylic medium and retarder.

I used a 2H pencil for the drawing because it doesn't smear as much when you paint over it.

WATERCOLOR PENCILS http://shrsl.com/2sc9w
Watercolor pencil really only works best if you paint over it with thick paint. Thin washes of color will dissolve as you paint over it with thin washes. I sometimes sketch on canvas with a gray watercolor pencil if I want to be able to erase the lines completely. You can just wipe off the pencil with a wet rag. Use a dull color so that it doesn't contaminate your paint as you paint over it.

Short pencils usually get thrown out because they're uncomfortable to draw with. A pencil extender will allow you to use up almost the entire pencil. I've tried a couple of brands but these are my favorite.
