In this video, and the next few I'm going to talk about shadowing.
Niloufar asks:
Hi Julian.
Shadowing is a really good method. But I have an idea. Don't you think it's better not to copy the voice of speaker simultaneously? I feel it's better to copy it after the speaker in order to hear our own voice.
What do think?
To be honest this is one of those questions that has no answer.
First off, Shadowing isn’t a method.
It’s an exercise.
So what you’re asking is kind of like saying asking whether push-ups or bench presses are better. Or to use another example, whether plum tomatoes are better than cherry tomatoes in a salad.
The answer is...
It depends on what you want to do.
Repeating is good for working on pronunciation. Shadowing, on the other hand, is brilliant for building “physical fluency”. What I mean by this, is that it’s not about creative stuff — organising the language in your head and producing it, which is a part of fluency, but separate from say, training your muscles to move correctly. Shadowing is about building good physical habits. Learning to move your mouth muscles correctly, with the right rhythm, speed and with all the pauses in the right place.
The point is, one is good for one thing, the other for another.
Personally, I prefer shadowing because you get far more for your time and effort.
But the point is….
It has to be part of a complete system.
Just like you wouldn’t JUST do bench presses and expect to improve all areas of your fitness, you can’t JUST do shadowing and expect it to work.
This is, of course why EES lessons are designed like they are.
The “Stages” of each lesson is designed to take you through the language and content as smoothly and naturally as possible.
