Miriam Cuibus: I am a comedian. My art is one of paradoxes. The fundamental paradox is that I'm not what I seem to be. I have a histrionic spirit, protean, I practice transfiguration, I love the fever and the frenzy of metamorphosis. The comedians are border beings. Ambiguity is our feature. The interval, the gap, "the no man's land" is our homeland. Here the real and unreal are mixed and confused. Here is where the exchange is done, where we receive and where we give forth. I think about the relationship between the actor and the character, then about the relationship with the audience. To give forward relies on to know how to receive. The state of "receive" and "give" is a meeting with two heads. To receive one must prepare, to train, to go through a process in which the expansion of the being takes place. Only an opened and dilated body-spirit can receive and can pay it forward. Give, take, act, react, transform are verbs defining a theatrical act. When playing, I pay it forward. I pay forward to the audience what I received from Euripides, from Shakespeare, from Caragiale or Beckett. When I teach, of course, I pay forward. For my students, I am someone through whom the teaching is going through. To become a master, you must start by being a disciple.
