New York's Manhattan Chinatown has been hit hard by the effects of Covid-19 since January 2020, even before cases surged in the US. Businesses were impacted as soon as the first coronavirus cases emerged in Wuhan, China. Almost a year later, some businesses have shuttered, while the ones that survived are left reeling from the impact of the pandemic.

Rose Wu, the manager of New Shanghai Deluxe on Mott Street, said her restaurant is only making 20 to 30 per cent of 2019’s revenue. Fortunately, her landlord did not force her to pay rent, she said. But many business owners are still struggling to make ends meet. Some are hoping the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday and the new vaccines will help them see the light at the end of the tunnel.
