he only place on earth to find the most amazing,
unique, one-of-a-kind, gravity-defying gift!!
AN IDEA
First, I think of a design that is unique, understandable and can be properly balanced. The Drunk Man design is one of my favorites because the way he naturally balances and moves mimics exactly how a drunk man would stumble around. I try to think of designs that make sense based on how they will move. This is not always possible, but it is a detail I try to capture when thinking of something new.
FORMING AND SHAPING
I start with raw stainless steel rods and bars that are unbent, even and clean. I bend, shape, grind and sculpt each part, piece and prop of the sculpture to what I believe looks the right size and proportion. I weld and braze each piece together and make sure that each joint and section has an even and clean finish.
FINDING BALANCE
After the overall design has been shaped and put together, the balancing bar is made to specific length depending on the design and counterweight size is determined. The counterweights are then cut to size. Thicker counterweights are used on heavier sculptures
CLEANING & POLISHING
Once the sculpture is fully formed, welded and balance is achieved, the sculpture is dirty and blackened from extreme heat during the welding and grinding processes. I carefully polish the sculpture back to its clean and raw stainless steel texture. Certain parts have a smooth hand-brushed finish such as the counterweights. There are tiny corners and areas of some sculptures that I can never fully reach so you will notice small areas that are tarnished and heat stained but adds to the industrial look of the sculpture. It does not distract from the overall clean and polished look of the sculpture - it is another detail and consequence of it being handmade.
The most amazing perpetuum mobiles, useless machines, experiments, inventions, strange and extraordinary science artefacts and art kinetic objects from around the world.
