The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) is located in the Banjaar sub-division of Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, India, in the far western Himalaya.Initially constituted in 1984, and formally notified as a national park in 1999, GHNP is a relatively recent addition to a network of protected areas in northern India and adjacent countries which increasingly provide protection to the Himalaya.
The climate of GHNP is typical of the western Himalaya’s front ranges. It has four distinct seasons: spring (April to June); rainy/summer (July to September); autumn (October to November) and winter (December to March).Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 23 June 2014, Confirmed sighting of rare and elusive “Serow” made in GHNP, in the month of May 2015.
GHNP provides sanctuary for four globally threatened mammals (Snow leopard, serow, himalayan tahr, musk deer), three globally threatened birds (Western tragopan, koklas, cheer pheasants) and a large number of medicinal plants, GHNP is home to 209 confirmed bird species, which attract birdwatchers from across the globe. These include the endangered western tragopan and four other pheasant species, The Himalayan musk deer depends on Usnea longissima (also known as Methuselah’s beard, the world’s longest species of lichen) for food during winter.
The number of plant species in the Himalaya is estimated at 25,000 – 10% of the world’s known species and 50% of India’s endemic flora. This includes 7,020 species of fungi, 1,159 species of lichen and 2,000 species of bryophytes (including mosses and worts), with the remainder ferns, angiosperms (flowering plants) and other species, Amongst the fauna are 218 species of fish, 74 species of amphibian, 149 species of reptile, 528 species of bird and 241 species of mammal. The animal life of the Himalaya is distinctly different from that of the plains.
The native populations of forests across the globe have protected and conserved their environments since time immemorial, and the inhabitants of the Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area (GHNPCA) are no exception. The area’s forests have historically supported the very survival of local residents, who continue to believe in sustainable harvesting, as regulated by social custom and religious belief, practice and myth. This includes reliance upon trees, medicinal plants, meadows for livestock grazing, rivers and sacred groves.
