In this exciting Gourmet On The Road episode, Food Lovers’ Editor, Kripal Amanna explores Namma Bengaluru's most popular dosa destinations!

In part one of this two part episode, he begins his trail at Mavalli Tiffin Rooms or MTR tasting a plain dosa and a masala dosa. He then visits Hotel Janatha and New Modern Hotel in South Bangalore for ragi and rava dosas.

Vidyarthi Bhavan had to be part of this list, together with smaller eateries such as Davanagere Benne Dosa and the crowd favourite Taaza Thindi!

MASALA DOSA - MTR
the quintessential triangular MTR masala dose served with a tuppa da batlu. Perfectly roasted crust that glistens, stuffed tempered mashed potatoes with a side of thick, spicy chutney.
this dosa is a ritual for many here and when you taste it you certainly understand why!

KHAALI DOSA - HOTEL JANATHA
called ‘khaali’ or ‘empty’ this dosa is served simply, with chutney on the side. the dosas are light and fluffy but definitely need the chutney to perk up its flavours.

a paper thin rava or semolina dosa studded with flecks of onion. a really tasty dosa. the saagu makes for the right accompaniment but this dosa doesn't need one!

GHEE MASALA DOSA
crisp thin dosa with a very inviting lustre. you can taste the ghee in this one. The aloogadde palya is soft and mellow. the chutney and slightly sweet sambar with the dosa is a great combination.

this dosa looks wholesome. can feel the weight of the ragi as you tear into it. the saagu, a medley of veggies with a tangy taste brings this slightly dry dosa to life.

SAAGU MASALA DOSA
this dosa is roasted perfectly with a crackly exterior and a soft interior. that slight tartness of the batter is present in every bite. the delicious saagu is a wholesome change from the typical potato stuffing.

a traditional masala dosa in every sense, served with chutney. the dosa is roasted to a nice deep brown crisp around the edges, yet soft and fluffy within. The flavourful potato palya is gently tempered.

BENNE DOSA
this dosa makes you salivate. so buttery! the minimum seasoning in the white potato stuffing helps the buttery notes shine even further. a coarsely ground coconut chutney with flecks of chilli packs a fiery punch.

light gold crust, with a soft potato mash stuffing. the batter is a little short on salt but the perfectly tempered chutney more than makes up for this. at Rs 25 this one’s a steal!
