Guardians of the Galaxy was Tyler Bates' most demanding score. Director James Gunn wanted something "dramatic and thematic". In addition to keeping up with the evolving vision of the film, Bates was asked to write huge chunks of the score so it could be played on set during the shoot.

"During action scenes and huge dramatic moments we blare the score on set so that the cast, crew, and camera can move in harmony with the music," said Gunn.

The main theme is one of the many cues that have more than 500 tracks of audio. Bates claimed that many orchestral passages are doubled and tripled instrumentation. He calls his work on it a space rock opera.
