Why Africa needs culturally sensitive talk therapy? | Etheldreda Nakimuli-Mpungu | TEDxEuston
Ethel surprises the TEDxEuston audience with a question that startles their innate assumptions about mental health professionals. Ethel profoundly, but gently, takes the TEDxEuston audience on her journey of being on both sides of mental health care and support. She shows how these experiences motivated her to cultivate a culturally sensitive group talk therapy approach to help provide mental health care for HIV patients on the Continent and the wider community.
Dr. Nakimuli-Mpungu is a clinician and mental health researcher and has worked on several mental health research projects in Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa. She has won many awards including a 2016 Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World. She has won grants to support her efforts in training lay health workers that deliver HIV treatments in rural northern Uganda to also recognise and deliver group-psychotherapy for depression. For this work, she was also honoured by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni with the Presidential National Independence Medal of Honour in 2016.
