Original BBQ Becky Meme Video - The First Viral "Karen"

According to many historians and journalists, this is the first viral "Karen" video that created awareness and started the trend of filming "Karen's" calling the police on Black people for frivolous reasons, in this case, it was BBQing in a popular park in Oakland, CA. The park is located in the very center of Oakland and regularly has people BBQing there, but before this video, many Black people faced the police being called on them for being in the park. For reference, local article "Racial Profiling Via Nextdoor.com": https://eastbayexpress.com/racial-profiling-via-nextdoorcom-2-1/

This had been going on for years and was well known to me. My husband at the time (this is years ago now and we've since gotten divorced for unrelated reasons) had several traumatizing experiences with a gun being pulled out on him by police, once time while he was leaving his job in front of his work because "he fit a description" and the only thing that de-escalated the police officer from the possibility of him being shot was another officer who arrived on the scene and noticed the scene looked off. Because of these experiences, experiences of racism I often witnessed as well, I believed my ex-husband's urgent need for me to confront the woman with my iPhone video. He knew I would film, it was originally not to film her but to film in case an officer arrived aggressively. I did not know the woman in this video, Jennifer Schulte would continue to play a victim act, and then would steal a business card my ex-husband friend Onsayo had given me. He handed me the business card to show he did fire prevention for his job, he laughed about the irony, She stole the card out of my hand when I had stopped filming saying "good, I'm going to contact his job and tell them, I'm going to make sure he gets fined and arrested" that's when I started filming again, following her closely so she couldn't take a picture of the card when I asked for it back, she said "sure just let me take a picture" no, "Can I get the card back" I repeat for the rest of the video, staying close to make sure she did not get the card.

While most people saw this as a funny meme, there is a lot of context to this story, and it gets frustrating when people do not understand how this relates to race, especially in Oakland where the Oakland Police department is still under federal oversight. There is plenty of documentation into the "Rider 5" and the scandals with OPD, and Jennifer Schulte switched from authoritative power figure to victim quickly throughout the video, understanding what kind of power she can hold to target the 2 Black men having a BBQ.

Oakland, Ca - At around 11:20 AM a white woman approached a black man named Deacon for having a BBQ grill at Lake Merritt today.
She told him he could not BBQ there and called the police. She would not leave Deacon alone. A young black woman was walking by overheard how the white woman was harassing him telling him he can not be there, she stopped and asked the woman to leave her alone. The white woman became aggressive with the woman. She started filming the woman's aggressive behavior and has told us it's up on Facebook (probably a live stream).
Shortly after that Deacon's friend Kenzie arrived. According to Kenzie, the woman said "Oh another nigger." She proceeded to tell all three of the people at the BBQ table that she owned the park, and they are not allowed there. She also said them they were going to jail.
Kenzie's wife (me) was up the street finishing brunch at Lakeshore Ave. He texted me a picture of the white woman and said: "If I go to jail this who did it to me."
So I walked over to the scene, and that's where the video starts. I arrived 12:50 pm.

The police did not stop the BBQ. They spoke with Deacon about an hour later and said they were BBQ-ing in a permitted zone.
