Re-creating Natural Forests with Native Trees
Peyad, 8 km away from Thiruvananthapuram City in Kerala, Anitha and Jayakumar undertake a thoughtful and loving task of growing vegetation on a small and mostly barren ground. They are motivated by their commitment to impact climate change, and by their knowledge of the Miyawaki Model of Afforestation. Dr. Akira Miyawaki, a professor at Yokohama National University, has planted millions of trees worldwide, and has been on a mission to create natural forests in a short span of time.

Anitha and Jayakumar were inspired because, with the Miyawaki method, forests can be grown even in areas as small as 100 sq m.
The method they have embraced is astonishingly simple. They must first find plants native to the region and then prepare the ground for planting.The couple decide to use 2 cents or 870 square feet of land and plan to plant about 350 saplings. Each sapling will be planted in pots that will be filled with rich soil, cow dung, and coir pith. Some of the prominent saplings include Mavu, Plavu, Kudampuli,Nellika, Peraor koyekkaetc.
