Rubaiyat മലയാളം by Omar Kayyam

Omar Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, physician, philosopher and poet. He was born in Nishapur in modern Iran. His poetry is wellknown in the Westem world. Omar's fame in the West rests upon a collection of his quatrains, attributed to him. (Aquatrain is a piece of verse complete in four lines, usually rhyming aaaa or aaba; it is close in style and spirit to the epigram.) Omar's poems gained attention when Edward Fitzgerald translated 600 verses of the celebrated The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in 1859 . These quatrains have been translated into almost every major language.

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is the title that Edward Fitzgerald gave to his 1859 translation of a selection of quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam, dubbed "the Astronomer-Poet of Persia". FitzGerald's work came to be greatly admired by the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1872 Fitzgerald had a third edition printed which increased interest in the work in America. By the 1880s, the book was extremely well known throughout the English- speaking world. Fitzgerald's work has been published in several hundred editions, and it has inspired similar translation efforts both in English and in many other languages. It has even been used in the titles of various works.

Stanza-wise Summary

All the saints and sages, who discussed the two worlds -life and afterlife-so learnedly are set aside like foolish prophets after their death. Their words are scorned at and their mouths are stopped with dust as they are now dead. The poet asks the reader to come with him and leave the wise to talk. One thing is sure - life quickly passes. One thing is certain - the rest are all lies. The flower that has once bloomed dies. When the poet was young he eagerly visited both doctors and saints. He heard great arguments about the transient nature of life. But it was like he came in and went out of the same door-they made no difference to him, in terms of knowledge. With their words, he began to sow the seeds of Wisdom. With his own hands he tended it to grow. This was the only harvest he reaped. Like water and wind, he came and went. Thus life is transient.

Wind and water are mysterious in nature. We do notknow their true origins or their end. We only know that they come and go. Life can be seen in a similar manner. We do not know the origin of life nor what happens after we die. All we know is that we exist for awhile on earth before we disappear from life on our death. The elements of water and wind represent infin- ity. They go on. We do not know much about them beyond sorme elemental knowledge. The same ap- plies to life. We do not know much about life or the afterife. Thus Khayyam tries to tell the reader that life is transient and we must live it to the full while we are.
