Troy Lee Designs Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing newcomer Justin Barcia says Roger Decoster told him to take a break as the Monster Energy Supercross championship looms this weekend.
Barcia is one of the most exciting topics heading into the 2021 season following his high-profile move to GasGas, with the colourful character appearing to be in career-best form.
The switch from factory Yamaha to the KTM-based GasGas machine has revitalised the number 51, so much so, he’s been riding excessively throughout the off-season.
The 28-year-old, who’s won the season-opener in the past two years, admits his training and performance has peaked in recent weeks, and that he needs to force himself to tame things down leading into Houston.
In fact, his significant riding schedule prompted Roger Decoster to intervene, suggesting he takes a break from riding to ensure he’s at peak performance for his championship campaign.
Decoster is the KTM Group Director of Motorsport and overlooks the racing programs of KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas.
Speaking at the recent Gas Gas Factory Racing team launch, this is what Barcia had to say.
“I’ve been feeling really good on the bike, honestly. This last week I’ve been peaking, so I’ve gotta keep telling myself to chill out and that we still have another week until we go racing.
“I’m just trying to save it up for the races.
“These last few weeks I’ve turned it down a notch - Roger has even been on me a bit, he’s like ‘you need to take take a break, chill out man - you’ve been riding too much’.
“We’re feeling really good - I’ve been super excited riding in general - I want to keep riding my bike because it’s been really fun.
With the move to Gas Gas, do you think Barcia can finally challenge for a Supercross crown right to the very end? Let me know in the comments below.
