Does Glutathione really work? Does it make your skin color fairer? How is the color of our skin decided?

For our International viewers, I would like to state that the desire to have fair skin is a very Asian and Indian desire. Though it is a fad that has been irrationally propagated by the cosmetic industry, the desire to become fairer is very much present in the people. These days a lot is being said about the potential of glutathione to help in lightening your skin shade. This video will help clear your doubts about that.

Our skin color is primarily determined by genetics but other factors such as exposure to the sun also play an important role. Melanin is the pigment that is mainly responsible for skin, eye, and hair color. Carotene and hemoglobin also contribute to an extent in deciding the skin color. Melanin is produced by cells known as melanocytes.

When these melanocytes produce more of the melanin pigment, your skin takes a darker color and if there is less production of melanin, you tend to have a light skin color.

Melanin has two types:
· Eumelanin - which gives a black-brown shade to our skin, and
· Pheomelanin - which gives a yellow-red shade to our skin

The ratio of these two pigments is mainly responsible for determining the skin color and there are six commonly known types of skin color described in the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Grading Scale.

It also works by increasing the conversion of eumelanin into pheomelanin, thus reducing the black-brown type of eumelanin and increasing the yellow-red type of pheomelanin.

Worldwide there are only about 4-5 studies that study the effect of glutathione on skin lightening. If you ask me as a clinician, these studies lack a few very important aspects which should be present in a scientific study. So I wouldn't rely on the strength of these studies. And for a drug this famous, I would expect many more such studies proving its effectiveness.

They did find that Glutathione does play a role in skin lightening to an extent. But I would want more evidence for the same. If you want me to cover each of the scientific studies that were done around the world on glutathione - let me know in the comments and I will discuss each of these in detail.

In our clinic, we do get patients who read and want Glutathione injections. Though we discourage patients from the same, for a few patients who have tanning and pigmentation due to sun damage, we have administered Glutathione. In our observation, not all patients get satisfactory results. But some patients are very happy with the results. So it works in some and doesn't work in others.

However, maintenance is needed to keep the fairer tone. The effect of glutathione stays till the time you take it. Once you stop taking the drug, its effect vanishes.
