Myopia is on the Rise in Kids and What Parents Can Do
Hi,
This is Dr. Shefali Miglani and I practice Optometry in Monroe Township, NJ 08831. In this video, I will share a quick update on the problem I am seeing more and more these days with kids between 7-17 who are increasingly getting nearsighted. The progression of nearsightedness or myopia is rising at alarming rates.
In fact, it was a segment on Good Morning America recently.
If parents see an increase in prescription of their kids, please don't leave it. Address it by visiting your eye doctor and having a conversation about what's going on and what you can do to halt that progression.
-----
In my practice, we have a myopia care center where we diagnose, treat and manage kids with myopia and find a path for them to halt or stop the progression altogether. Some of the options we use:
1. Reduce screen time
2. Increase outdoor play where they get to see far and near
3. Explore options such as Atropine drops, Ortho-K lenses and soft lenses
-----
The path towards helping our children is to work with them in improving their vision so that we might prevent future complications from myopia such as macular degeneration, cataract and retinal detachment.
-----
Dr. Shefali Miglani is an Optometrist practicing myopia management using Ortho-K, Atropine Drops and Dual Focused Contact lenses to manage progressive myopia in kids. She is also the Chief Medical Officer of Hoot Myopia Care where she designs clinical protocols and content to help parents manage myopia in kids.
