The H.M.S. Endeavour Bark - My Build Log from Jan 2013 to Dec 2018

BUILD NOTES
In 2013, this kit was purchased. I had constructed the inner keel and bulkheads. Then it sat along with the Black Pearl inner keel ... both collecting dust - until they finally had their first level of planking and the decking planks added in December 2017.

Be careful of power toys (like electrical belt sanders) hahahahaha I used my belt sander on the side, g-clamped to my workbench to assist with the shaping of the masts and yards. This is not the problem. The problem is when, for-a-split-second, you lose concentration, and the knuckle of the index finger then becomes the mast and connects with the sanding belt - while it is turned on.

This was a slight set back. So off to the running water to clean wound - and the red stuff that seemed to not stop coming out. Get to first aid box. Apply steri-strips. Cover area with gauze bandage (no problem now), and take two panadol for pain.

Of course, one needs to get the job one, so thirty minutes later, sanding resumes. Without further injury. Oooops? Oh - the finger healed fine. Took a bit.. but only light scarring remains. Very lucky! No further serious injuries happened until the building of the King of the Mississippi....(but that's another story.....)

The other challenge was how to learn all the techniques to the rigging - being the first time I had reached this level. The book 'Rigging Period Ship Models', along with numerous websites on ship building helped me achieve that which I had initially no confidence to do. Thank you to all the other model ship builders that have posted their notes and images on-line, and to books printed.

I ended up using blank A4 pages and I mapped out the running rigging of what bit goes where, and why it goes there. I believe that the end result looks pretty good - and even if others can see all my mistakes, I am proud to have a fine looking ship in my now-growing collection.

HISTORY
The HMS Endeavour Bark 1768 modeling kit is the perfect gift for advanced modelers. [Yet - I started this as an almost-beginner :) :)] With the acquisition of this wooden model you will have all the necessary parts to complete this scale model ship 1/60: fine woods, hand-sewn sails, threads, metallic accessories... This artwork of naval modeling is a treasure to add to your personal collection.

The HMS Endeavour is a beautiful coal freighter ship from XVIII Century reconverted for the long expeditions of Lieutenant James Cook by the great South Sea.

This ship was launched in 1765 and was chosen by James Cook three years later to prepare his historic trip, the HMS Endeavour was part of important discoveries. Parts of Australia was discovered, and Tahiti and numerous islands were located; animal and plant species unknown in Europe were also discovered. For the first time it was calculated with great precision the position in latitude by mathematical formulas.

The contribution of James Cook trips to navigation, seamanship and geographical exploration are of historical importance.
