ICAP is a long-term vision to address cooling needs. This plan aims to reduce cooling and refrigeration demand by 20-25 percent by 2037.
The need for cooling is cross-sectoral and vital to economic growth. It is required in residential and commercial buildings, cold chains and refrigeration, transportation, and industries. Its goal is to provide everyone with sustainable cooling and heating while benefiting the environment and society. Refrigeration and air conditioning emit about 10% of global CO2.
Summer heat casualties cause mass deaths. With proper cooling, one's productivity rises, benefiting the economy. The plan may lead to new cooling technologies and make India a leader in such technologies. The plan will help to align consumer, economic, and global interests on climate change.
Air conditioning reduces electricity bills, allowing consumers to save money.
Builders will benefit from new efficient technologies. The plan will help India meet its Paris emissions reduction commitment. To save energy, buildings, doors and windows must be airtight. Another solution is White Painted Roofs, which are highly energy efficient in terms of cooling comfort.
Plan appears to be urban. The Indian government must consider the needs of those who work in agricultural fields or live on city streets.
This plan's scope and umbrella must be expanded to include plants. Green roofs and green pavements help reduce heat loads in urban areas. We also need to work on ‘space cooling', which means building technology that provides people with thermal comfort.
