Top US general collapses during Senate testimony
(15 Jun 2010) SHOTLIST
1. UPSOUND: (English) John McCain, US Senator:
"... about whether we're actually going to stay or not, and whether we're going to do what's necessary to succeed rather than set an arbitrary time line, and the best way to ..." (McCain stops speaking, looks shocked)
2. Side view of US General David Petraeus at witness table surrounded by people rushing to help him, he gets up and walks out of committee hearing room, UPSOUND: (English) Carl Levin, US Senator: "We're going to recess now for a few moments. We'll recess until the call of the chair."
STORYLINE
US General David Petraeus slumped over the table during a Senate hearing on Tuesday morning, but revived after a few seconds and left the room unaided.
After about 20 minutes he returned to the hearing room.
Petraeus, 57, had finished telling Senator John McCain that he believed the planned 2011 pullout of US troops in Afghanistan remained on track, and McCain was responding when the room fell silent and aides began crowding around the four-star general.
Petraeus, who oversees the war in Iraq and Afghanistan as head of US Central Command, briefly put his head on the table, then rose, appearing dazed, before standing up and being escorted from the room.
Senator Carl Levin returned several minutes later to say that the general appeared to be all right.
Petraeus returned to the room briefly and told the senators he was feeling a little bit light-headed. He joked that McCain's question wasn't the cause.
In his lengthy appearances before the Senate and House armed services committees in September 2007 to testify on Iraq, he was reported to have endured great back pain and got through it with the help of the drug Motrin.
Petraeus was on Tuesday testifying on the war in Afghanistan.
The general has had a high-profile career, and many believe he is the leading candidate to become the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He commanded all forces in Iraq under President George W. Bush.
