An original Ford Anglia E494A survivor - a walkaround & drive in a classic British car of the 1950s
Here we see a wonderfully-original Ford Anglia E494A of 1952, Ford's 8hp "motoring for the masses" offering of 1948 - 1953, before the 103E Popular took over as the company's low-cost offering to motorists on a budget.
The E494A Anglia can trace its roots back to the small English Fords of the 1930s, starting with the Model Y of 1932 onwards, in which the Anglia's 933cc sidevalve four-cylinder engine made its debut. The car shown in this video dates to 1952 and is a UK market car, some export markets received Anglias fitted with the larger 1172cc "10hp" engine (RAC rating for tax purposes, NOT bhp!), but in the UK the E494A came with the smaller 933cc engine as standard.
This isn't a barn find car, but it's in amazing condition for its age, having spent many many years sat in a garage prior to being extricated and sympathetically returned to running order in recent years. The paintwork is original, as is the well-preserved interior. In this video I take a close look at this super old survivor, talk about its history with the current owner, and enjoy a quick ride out in it to sample this classic British car of the 1950s.
If, like me, you like your old cars original and wearing their age on their sleeve, this should be right up your street. A fast car it is not, instead it is an object lesson in preserving originality wherever possible, and cars don't get much more time-warp original than this.
I also talk through the key differences between the outwardly-similar Ford Anglia E494A, and the later Ford Popular 103E that replaced it, which was heavily based on the older car but even more basic in terms of trim - although it did benefit from the larger 1172cc Ford E93A engine being a standard feature, shared with the contemporary E493A Prefect. A few thoughts on how to buy a Ford Anglia or Ford Pop 103e are also given, with pointers on where to look for rust in their shared bodyshells.
