How to Create Atmosphere in Watercolor

▶︎Free Video Lesson: 7 Secrets of Fresh, Powerful Painting https://www.learntopaintwatercolor.com/7secrets

In watercolor the words atmosphere and mood are often used interchangeably because they refer to the emotion that a piece of art evokes. When we convey an atmosphere in our watercolor paintings, we can elicit feelings, conjure memories, and connect more deeply with the viewer.

In today’s video, I offer tips on how to create atmosphere in your watercolor paintings by paying close attention to the light, shadows, and edges in your scene.

We’ll look at three examples from Joseph Zbukvic’s book – Mastering Atmosphere and Mood in Watercolor: the Critical Ingredients that Turns Painting into Art – where he paints the same scene in three different stages of light. I talk through some strategies you can use to achieve this range of atmospheric effects in your paintings. Check it out!

As always, let me know if you have any watercolor painting topics you’d like me to cover in the future. In the meantime, keep practicing and keep moving forward. See you next time!
