The Suburban Wasteland: How the 'Burbs Eviscerate the Environment (Part 2)

The expansive grass lawns and spread-out homesteads give the suburbs a superficial green appearance. However, America’s millions of acres of suburban turf grass have the opposite effect in practice, acting as the leading contributor to widespread chemical pollution, destruction of ecosystems, chronic water use and misuse, and the creeping insect apocalypse. In this second part of our reporting on the suburbs and the environment, we cover a range of chronic environmental disasters that suburbanization creates and exacerbates—not just global warming.
