UK MPs Vote to Reject Call for 'Immediate Cease-Fire' in Gaza Strip

The leader of Britain's opposition party Keir Starmer suffered a rebellion in parliament on Wednesday after a vote on a Gaza ceasefire was defeated by 125 votes to 293 - 56 of his MPs backed the motion.

While Starmer was in favour of a "humanitarian pause," he argued a ceasefire would give advantage to Hamas. He had said he would sack any his frontbenchers who backed the motion.

The vote, calling for an end to the "collective punishment of the Palestinian people" and urging a ceasefire, was rejected by a majority of 168. Along with the 56 Labour MPs, it was supported by 39 SNP MPs, 15 Liberal Democrats and independent MPs Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott and Andy McDonald.
