How to Formulate and Calculate Your Own Soap Recipes
In this video I talk through my method for formulating soap recipes. I go through all the details of the process (including how to decide on water amounts for your recipes) and then demonstrate how to calculate a soap recipe using the Soap Calc online soap calculator (there’s a link below).
Please see this video if you are confused by the term 'lye concentration' and need further help understanding how water and lye amounts are calculated for soap recipes:
Calculating Water in Soap Recipes and Clarifying 'Lye Concentration' https://youtu.be/wd7_uZfbPn4
And here is my video that explains the term 'Superfat' in detail:
Superfat Explained - Understanding 'Superfat' and 'Lye Discounting' in Handmade Soap Making https://youtu.be/cI6D3kbAb40
You will notice that I use the terms ‘lye’ and ‘sodium hydroxide’ throughout the video – for the purposes of this video the term ‘lye’ refers to sodium hydroxide (chemical formula is NaOH). There are other types of lye that can be used for soap making (for example, potassium hydroxide/KOH is used to make liquid soap), however most solid bar soaps are made with sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide is also known and often sold as ‘caustic soda’.

This is a great chart I use to decide my oils for soap making, it can also help you to decide how much you would like to superfat your soaps depending on the oils you use: https://www.lovinsoap.com/oils-chart/

IMPORTANT
The information provided in this video and description box text is intended for people who are familiar with the basics of soap making - including soap making terms, ingredients, the methods used to calculate and make soap recipes, and the necessary requirements to make soap safely. Sodium hydroxide (and other lye types) in granular form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the use of personal protective equipment. If you have never made soap before, please watch the videos listed below (especially the first one) before you attempt any soap recipe. As a hobby or professional soap maker, you are responsible for the safety of yourself and others around you when you make soap. Please take the time to learn about soap making and soap safety before you attempt your first soap batch.
