The S1000RR received a full model change for 2019-2020 at the November 2018 EICMA, Milan, Italy. The 999 cc (61.0 cu in) four-cylinder engine is entirely new, which is claimed to produce 152 kW (204 hp; 207 PS) at 13,500 rpm (up 4.5 kW (6.0 hp; 6.1 PS) from the previous iteration) and 113 N⋅m (83 lbf⋅ft) of torque at 11,000 rpm. This new engine employs BMW ShiftCam technology on the intake side, which varies intake valve timing and lift. The system has sliding concentric outer shafts, with two different cam profiles on them, on a splined inner shaft with the drive on one end. An ECU-controlled motor switches between low- and high-speed cams at 9,000 rpm in under 10 milliseconds, which produce soft, low-lift, short-duration cams for low-down and midrange torque, then a more aggressive profile cams for peak power production. The outer shafts are moved by a movable pin engaging in a cammed slot on the shaft, which slides the outer camshaft section left and right as needed. BMW claims the addition of this system gives the S1000RR a more linear torque curve than its predecessor.
The 2017-2020 model, introduced to reporters at EICMA in late 2016, had a significantly redesigned engine the first since the last engine update on the 2009 model. This new engine has a higher RPM limit and no balancer shaft to quell vibration, also a mechanical variable valve timing used for ten years by Suzuki in MotoGP and drive by wire throttle.This model is the first to get the addition of traction control with a (IMU) inertial measuring unit measuring yaw, roll and pitch also all lighting is now LED. Another first for any GSX-R is the use of a fuel gauge on this model.Along with the new 2017 GSX-R1000 model, Suzuki has also released an up spec model GSX-R1000R; this R model comes with a Motion Track Brake System, Bi-directional quick shifter and launch control. Also on the R model, as reported by Sport Rider, are the same Showa Balance Free Front (BFF) fork and Balance Free Rear Cushion (BFRC Lite) shock that come standard on the 2016 Kawasaki ZX-10R. Specifications are 202 horsepower at 13,200 rpm (claimed), 157.2 (rear wheel), 86 lb-ft torque at 10,000 rpm (claimed) and 76.3 lb⋅ft (103.4 N⋅m) (rear wheel); 76.0 mm x 55.1 mm bore x stroke, and 13.2:1 compression ratio.
